Sen. Bellows introduced the legislation, LD 1901 “Resolve, To Recognize the 100th Anniversary of the American Legion on the Capitol Grounds,” in 2018 after being approached by Area 4 Americanism Officer Deb Couture of West Gardiner.
“I’m honored to have played this small part in supporting the members of the American Legion and in recognizing their service and sacrifice to country and community for the last 100 years,” said Sen. Bellows. “It is fitting that we now have a permanent reminder in the State House of their work and dedication so that legislators never lose sight of why we’re here and who we represent.”
A ceremony to unveil the new plaque was held in the Hall of Flags today, attended by Gov. Janet Mills, Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap, legislators, American Legion member, and others.
“March 15, 2019, is the actual 100th Anniversary of the American Legion in Maine, so this is a very important day for all of the American Legion and we look forward to continuing our work for the next 100 years,” said Couture.
The American Legion is the nation’s largest veteran service organization. The Legion is “committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow servicemembers and veterans.”
