Carson receives the “President’s Award” for work on public health issues

AUGUSTA — Sen. Brownie Carson, D-Harpswell, has received the President’s Award from the Maine Public Health Association (MPHA) for his work on public health issues in the Legislature.

“I am honored and humbled to be recognized by the MPHA,” said Sen. Carson. “There is still much to do to improve and build Maine’s public health infrastructure. Whether it is rebuilding the public health nursing program or ensuring funding for school-based health centers, I look forward to continuing that work in the Legislature.”

The recognition is largely the result of Carson’s efforts in the 2017 legislative session to restore Maine’s public health nursing services following six years of devastating cuts and mismanagement by the LePage Administration.

Carson worked hard to earn support from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers to pass this legislation and overturn the governor’s veto. The bill became law and went into effect late last year.

“Senator Carson has been tireless in his efforts to put public health at the forefront in the Legislature,” said Rebecca Boulos, the Executive Director of the MPHA. “He is incredibly deserving of this award and I am thrilled to present it to him later this month.”

The President’s Award is the highest award given by the MPHA. Carson will be presented with the award as part of MPHA’s annual Spring Awards Ceremony on May 31 at Viles Mansion in Augusta.

Carson is serving his first term in the Maine Legislature representing Senate District 24, which includes the towns of Brunswick, Freeport, Harpswell, North Yarmouth and Pownal.
