FOAA request for Republican poll results

Today Senate and House Democratic leadership issued a letter to their Republican counterparts requesting, under Maine’s Freedom of Access Act, a copy of the Republican caucus polling results initiated from the Democrats’ request to reconvene the Legislature to consider and respond to the Governor LePage’s line-item veto of the supplemental budget. The request also asks that the poll results be entered in to the Legislative record.
In the letter, Hobbins and Cain say,

“The results of your caucus polls have the same effect as sustaining the line-item vetoes, but without the constitutional duty of having convened and voted in each respective legislative body. We feel strongly that such consideration and a consequential vote, especially on the first-ever line item veto, should not take place far from the public eye.”

STATEMENTS FROM SENATE AND HOUSE DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP:

Senate Democratic Leader, Sen. Barry Hobbins of Saco:

We know that Democracy can be hard work. Unfortunately, the Republicans have forfeited their responsibility to the Constitution and to the voters.

It’s a puzzling change of heart by the Republicans. Last week the budget had the resounding support of both parties and this week Republicans have flip-flopped. The people of Maine should know where we all stand.”

House Democratic Leader, Rep. Emily Cain of Orono:

“The members who voted not to return should be known and held accountable. Constituents deserve to know who chose not to do their job this week.”
