AUGUSTA — On Wednesday, Detective Ben Campbell of Millinocket was killed in the line of duty in a crash on Interstate 95 in Hampden. According to the Maine State Police, Det. Campbell was struck by a tire that came off a logging truck while assisting another vehicle. Det. Campbell leaves behind a wife and 6-month old son.
In response, Senate President Troy Jackson, D-Allagash, and Sen. Bill Diamond, D-Windham, released the following statements:
President Troy Jackson:
“There are few words to describe this event other than a terrible tragedy for the entire state. To lose someone is hard enough, let alone to lose someone in the line of duty. On behalf of the entire Senate, I want to extend my deepest condolences to Det. Campbell’s family and his colleagues on the Maine State Police force.
“Too often we forget the dedication and sacrifice of our law enforcement officers, in particular, our state troopers. Each day they get up to serve and protect our people and our state. It’s a tough and often thankless job but one that we all depend on. Today, I would urge us all to keep Det. Campbell in our thoughts, take time to thank our state troopers and law enforcement officers, and be careful on the roads.”
Sen. Bill Diamond:
“The death of Det. Campbell is a truly devastating event. I want to express my sincere condolences to Det. Campbell’s family. The commitment of our law enforcement officers to our people and our state is an extraordinary one. The safety of our law enforcement officers is critical to the safety of our state, whether it’s when they’re on the road or at the scene of an incident.”
