Law sponsored by Senator Valentino will protect sand beach from further erosion

AUGUSTA – Senator Linda Valentino’s measure to protect Saco Bay from erosion caused by the Camp Ellis jetty has become law.

“This law will help critical work to restore the shoreline to go forward,” said Senator Valentino. “We must act now to ensure that this coastline is not washed away with the tide.”

According to the Maine Geological Survey, half of all Mainers live near the coast, and more than 6 million people visit Maine’s coastline each year.

The new law will streamline the permit process for sand rejuvenation efforts in areas affected by erosion caused by federal government installations.

The bill, LD 1644, “An Act To Allow Municipalities To Stabilize Sand Dunes Affected by Actions of the Federal Government,” is now law.
