AUGUSTA — On Tuesday, Governor Janet Mills delivered her State of the Budget address after submitting her biennial budget to the State Legislature in January. President Jackson and Senate Majority Leaders released the following statements:

Senate President Troy Jackson, D-Allagash:

“Governor Mills underscored our shared commitment to making good on promises made to working families, small businesses and rural communities. At the same time, we have an opportunity to build on our work to improve access to health care, expand quality, affordable child care and address the growing affordable housing crisis in this state. It’s no secret that we as leaders of this state have our work cut out for us, but I’m confident that we are up to the task. Together we’ve worked to fully fund our schools, deliver property tax and energy relief, and invest in long-term care. The Governor’s steady leadership will ensure that we continue to deliver for the people who sent us here and set Maine up for long-term success.”

Senate Majority Leader Eloise Vitelli, D-Arrowsic:

“Mainers up and down the state have sounded the alarm about rising energy prices and market instability. Growing and sustaining Maine’s energy independence is essential if we want to lower costs and stabilize the market for working families, older Mainers and small businesses. It’s why I was thrilled to hear the Governor outline a set of ambitious energy goals in her State of the Budget address. Her remarks make it clear that she understands what Mainers are experiencing on the ground and is committed to achieving long-term relief.”

Assistant Senate Majority Leader Mattie Daughtry, D-Brunswick:

“Given the ongoing challenges facing Maine families, I applaud the Governor’s commitment to Housing First, the historic increase to the Maine State Grant and the continuation of free community college. These programs are vital to the success and economic stability of our people and communities. At the same time, I’m encouraged by the Governor’s initiatives to remove the wait lists for Mainers with disabilities. This is sorely needed and long overdue.”
