Sen. Anne Carney, Rep. Michelle Boyer honor Cape Robotics state champions with legislative sentiments
AUGUSTA — On May 29, Sen. Anne Carney, D-Cape Elizabeth, and Rep. Michelle Boyer, D-Cape Elizabeth, presented legislative sentiments to three Cape Elizabeth Robotics teams who won the VEX Robotics Maine State Championship. The eighth-grade team, the “Killer Sea Rats,” received a legislative sentiment to honor them winning the Middle School Championship and both the Excellence and Skills Champion awards. The sophomore team, “Self-Destruct System,” and the freshmen team, “Armageddon,” received a legislative sentiment honoring their shared victory in the High School Championship. The teams were joined in the Senate Chamber by the coach Alexander Anesko, who teaches computer science at Cape Elizabeth High School, as well as a few of their parents.
“Hosting the Cape Robotics teams at the State House again this year to honor their state championship win is a testament to the hard work these students put into their robots every school year,” said Sen. Carney. “Robotics is a fantastic way to bring hands-on STEM learning opportunities into our schools, and it’s great to see the success of the program in Cape Elizabeth. Congratulations!”
“The Cape Robotics team has shown the power of diligence, ingenuity and teamwork,” said Rep. Boyer. “It was an honor to meet them at the State House and I wish them all the best in their future competitions.”
The VEX Robotics State Championship took place on February 28 and March 1, 2025. The students on these teams worked over several months to design, build and code their own custom robots in order to compete in the challenge. All three teams went on to compete at the world championships in Dallas in May, where the Killer Sea Rats placed ninth in their division of about 80 teams.
The Killer Sea Rats won the “Trifecta” at the State Championship, which includes both the Excellence and Skills Champion awards. The Excellence Award is the highest overall award, and it recognizes the team that does the best on all fronts, including an interview. The Skills Award is for the team with the highest number of points when competing against themselves.
