Sen. Baldacci shares MDOT work plan for state bridge and road projects

AUGUSTA – Sen. Baldacci, D-Bangor, is pleased to announce the details of Maine’s three-year transportation infrastructure work plan, and what it means for Senate District 9 which includes Bangor and Hermon. The plan is released annually with an outline of the Maine Department of Transportation’s strategy for road, bridge and other transportation upgrades and maintenance projects.

“As Bangor continues to be a hub for central Maine, it is important that we maintain and improve our infrastructure,” said Sen. Baldacci. “I am delighted to share the latest work plans from MDOT and thank the hard-working state employees that bring these plans to life for all of us.”

According to the MDOT, the work plan covers approximately $3.17 billion worth of construction and maintenance, which includes 2,316 work items. The three-year plan estimates MDOT will invest in 115 miles of highway construction and rehabilitation; 1,057 miles of pavement preservation; 2,162 miles of light capital paving for roads and highways; 353 safety and spot improvements; and 235 bridge projects.

The following breakdown is the planned capital and maintenance work for some communities in Senate District 9 in 2022:

 Airport/Runway Maintenance:

  • In Bangor, safety and infrastructure improvements that may include design and permitting for the rehabilitation of Runway 15-33 at Bangor International Airport.

Bicycle/Pedestrian:

  • In Hermon, pedestrian safety improvements including a sidewalk on the west side of Billing Road extending to Schoolhouse Lane.

Highway Paving/Rehabilitation:

  • In Bangor, highway paving on Route 15 beginning 0.07 of a mile north of Husson Avenue and extending north 2.72 miles.
  • In Bangor, highway paving on State Street beginning at Hancock Street and extending northeast 0.96 of a mile. BACTS Sponsored.
  • In Bangor, highway paving on Route 2/Hogan Road beginning at Route 2 and extending north 0.44 of a mile. Includes Hogan Road/Route 2 intersection.
  • In Bangor, highway paving/mill and fill on Hancock Street beginning at Route 2 and extending southwest 0.81 of a mile to Oak Street.
  • In Bangor, highway paving on Route 15 beginning 0.36 of a mile west of Pushaw Road and extending northwest 0.83 of a mile.
  • In Bangor and Brewer, bridge rehabilitation on Interstate 395, Veterans Remembrance Bridge (#1558) over the Penobscot River, located at the Bangor-Brewer town line.
  • In Hermon, highway paving on Interstate 95 Northbound and Southbound beginning at Exit 180 and extending south 3.75 miles.

Highway Safety and Spot Improvements:

  • In Bangor, highway safety spot and intersection improvements at the diverging diamond interchange on Hogan Road/Interstate 95 Exit 187 and Hogan Road/I-95 Bridge (#5823) over Interstate 95. Located 0.26 of a mile north of Haskell Road.
  • In Bangor, on highway safety spot and intersection improvements located at the intersections of Broadway and State Street; Hancock Street and Oak Street; Washington Street, Oak Street and Penobscot Bridge; Washington Street, Exchange Street and Penobscot Plaza. BACTS Sponsored.

Public Transportation:

  • In Bangor, American with Disabilities Act (ADA) operating assistance for Bangor, Community Connector, Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for urbanized area transit.
  • In Bangor, FTA Section 5307 for operating assistance, preventive maintenance, and ADA Operating for Community Connector.
  • In Bangor, rural transit capital assistance for preventative maintenance, with Penquis (Bangor area non-profit organization).
  • In Bangor, Transit Capital Assistance for Federal Transit Administration Bus and Bus Facilities, FTA Discretionary Grant Award. The Community Connector Public Transit System in Bangor received a grant to implement fixed route bus stops, build bus shelters.

Policy, Planning and Research:

  • In Bangor, Bangor Area Comprehensive Transportation System (BACTS) Unified Planning Work Program: Federally mandated program associated with Maine’s U.S. Census-defined metropolitan planning area in the Greater Bangor region for years 2022-2023.
  • In Bangor, statewide program development to support Penobscot/Piscataquis Regional Planning Organization.
  • In Bangor and Brewer, bridge improvements study on Interstate 395.
