Sen. Carpenter bill to boost tiny homes industry in Maine signed into law
AUGUSTA — A bill from Sen. Mike Carpenter, D-Houlton, to authorize tiny homes to be bought, sold and transported in the state of Maine, was signed into law by Gov. Janet Mills this week. The bill, LD 1981, “An Act Regarding the Regulation of Tiny Houses,” defines tiny homes in statute and allows them to be titled through the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
“I worked closely with Corinne Watson, founder and CEO of Tiny Homes of Maine, to make sure we could get the tiny homes industry in Maine back up and running,” said Sen. Carpenter. “I’m glad that this bill has become law, because I care about supporting small businesses. This law will help Tiny Homes of Maine, which is based in Houlton, and all other Maine businesses like it thrive.”
LD 1981 ensures that tiny homes can be built and sold in Maine, reversing a previous mandate issued from the Secretary of State in June 2019, which banned issuing titles and registrations for tiny homes.
As an emergency measure, LD 1981 went into effect immediately upon becoming law.
