Sen. Carson recognized by American Nurses Association

AUGUSTA — Sen. Brownie Carson, D-Harpswell, was recognized by the American Nurses’ Association of Maine (ANA-MAINE) at the State House on Wednesday for his legislative achievements and dedication to nurses and other public health professionals during his first term in the Legislature.

“I am humbled and honored to be recognized by the American Nurses Association,” said Sen. Carson. “The real credit, however, goes to our nurses. They are among the most noble professions and are essential to building healthy individuals and healthy communities.”

The recognition is largely the results of Carson’s major effort in the first session of the Legislature to restore Maine’s public health nursing services following six years of devastating cuts and mismanagement by the LePage Administration. The bill became law last year after lawmakers overrode the governor’s veto.

In a memo to Sen. Carson announcing his recognition, ANA-Maine Board of Directors President Patricia Boston said Carson showed determination in his efforts to restore public health nursing as it passed through the Maine Legislature.

“[Sen. Carson] demonstrated respect for public health nursing and compassion for the people who are served by the health care services delivered by public health nurses,” said Boston.

The ANA-Maine is the professional organization of registered nurses in Maine and a constituent member of the American Nurses Association, a full-service professional organization representing the nation’s entire registered nurse population. Nurses from all work settings are welcome to join ANA-MAINE, whose common purpose is to advance excellence in nursing.

Carson represents Maine Senate District 24, which includes the towns of Brunswick, Freeport, Harpswell, North Yarmouth and Pownal.
