Sen. Curry welcomes Eagle Scouts Aidan Howard and Owen Mailloux to the State House, presents legislative sentiment
AUGUSTA — On Monday, May 13, Sen. Chip Curry, D-Belfast, welcomed two young leaders from Waldo County to the Maine State House to celebrate their achievements in Scouting. Aidan Howard of Swanville and Owen Mailloux of Belfast, both members of Troop 37, were formally recognized for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout — an honor reached by only about 6% of all Scouts nationwide. Sen. Curry presented each Scout with a legislative sentiment in the Senate chamber.
“Aidan and Owen have each made a real difference through their Eagle Scout projects — not just checking a box, but by doing something that matters to their neighbors,” said Sen. Curry. “I was proud to welcome them to the State House and to see the kind of thoughtful, community-focused leadership they represent.”
Owen Mailloux, a fourth-generation Scout and third-generation Eagle Scout, began his journey as a first-grade Cub Scout. For his Eagle project, Owen led a significant community improvement initiative at Belfast City Park. He removed a deteriorating tennis hitting wall and built a new one, and he also repaired and replaced several benches throughout the park. With a volunteer team he organized, Owen’s project contributed roughly 65 hours of work to improve a cherished public space.
Aidan Howard, a third-generation Scout, joined Scouting in the fifth grade and followed in the footsteps of his two older brothers, who also earned the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop 37. Aidan’s Eagle project addressed a local safety concern by constructing a Life Jacket Loaner Station at the Swan Lake Boat Launch in Swanville. The station provides life jackets in a full range of sizes — from infant to adult extra-large — and serves as a public safety resource for boaters.
Both Scouts are longtime members of Troop 37 in Belfast, which is led by their fathers, Ben Mailloux and Nate Howard.
Sen. Curry is serving his third term in the Maine Senate, representing all of Waldo County. He serves as the Senate Chair of the Housing and Economic Development Committee and sits on the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee.
