Sen. Daughtry earns perfect score for voting record on environment and natural resources

AUGUSTA – Sen. Mattie Daughtry, D-Brunswick, earned a perfect score from the Maine Conservation Voters for her votes this session to preserve Maine’s natural resources, promote energy independence and protect the public from harmful chemicals. Sen. Daughtry was one of 17 state senators to earn a perfect score on the 2021 Environmental Scorecard released earlier this week, which tracks how lawmakers voted on seven key proposals debated by the Maine Legislature this past year.

“It’s impossible to live in Maine without recognizing the value of our natural resources,” said Sen. Daughtry. “It’s apparent every day how important our forests, waterways and public lands are to all of us. Stepping up to protect the environment is more important now than ever before. Climate change is a serious concern for everyone, especially our younger generations. That’s why I believe in centering climate-conscious policies and stepping up to protect our planet.”

Sen. Daughtry has a long history of making the environment a top priority. She believes in promoting, preserving and protecting Maine’s environment, ultimately supporting the health and well-being of people and the economy. This year, Sen. Daughtry sponsored a law to require schools to publicly report the use of pesticides on school property. In addition, she championed legislation to make a historic investment in the Land for Maine’s Future program to continue to secure public lands for future generations.

Sen. Daughtry also supported legislation to reform Maine’s recycling system to incentivize corporations to use less wasteful packagingdivest Maine’s retirement fund from fossil fuels and ban the use of aerial pesticides. Sen. Daughtry also co-sponsored legislation to phase out perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in Maine over the next ten years. PFAS are “forever chemicals” that have contaminated water and soils across the state, which harms our environment, farmland and drinking water. PFAS are toxic and have been linked to adverse health effects.
