AUGUSTA — Earlier today, Sen. Mattie Daughtry, D-Brunswick, was sworn into the Maine Senate. Sen. Daughtry was elected to her second term in the Senate in November.

Gov. Janet Mills administered the oath of office to Sen. Daughtry and 34 of her Senate colleagues, all of whom have been elected to serve two-year terms. She represents the people of Senate District 24, which includes Brunswick, Freeport, Harpswell, Pownal, Chebeague Island and part of Yarmouth.

“I am delighted to continue serving Brunswick, Freeport, Harpswell and Pownal, and I am looking forward to representing Chebeague Island and Yarmouth for the first time,” said. Sen. Daughtry. “As a Millennial female small business owner who grew up in the Midcoast, I know that I have a special opportunity to help support new and working families. This means fully funding our public schools, growing the local economy, promoting affordable housing and making paid family and medical leave a reality here in Maine. I hope that you’ll continue to contact me and share your priorities and thoughts so that we can work together on the biggest challenges in the district.”

Sen. Mattie Daughtry co-owns Moderation Brewing Company and lives in Brunswick. Prior to running for the Maine Senate, she served four terms in the Maine House, representing Brunswick. In 2020 she was elected to her first term in the Maine Senate, during which she served as Senate Chair of the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee and then the Labor and Housing Committee. Shortly after the session began, Sen. Daughtry was elected by her caucus to be Assistant Senate Majority Leader – one of the youngest in Maine’s history. Serving in this role allowed her to help set legislative priorities for the Senate Majority Caucus, which included the universal free school meal program, $850 disaster relief payments, and free community college for the high school graduating class of 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023. Sen. Daughtry is the Senate Chair for the Commission to Develop a Paid Family and Medical Leave Benefits Program. The Commission will submit its report to the Legislature this month.

The swearing-in ceremony was held in the Senate Chamber, and was attended by family and friends of the Senators, as well as the general public. A livestream of the event was made available to the general public, and can be viewed online at http://legislature.maine.gov/senate/.
