AUGUSTA – On Tuesday, Sen. Denise Tepler, D-Topsham, and President Matthea Daughtry, D-Brunswick, joined Reps. Sally Cluchey, D-Bowdoinham; Rafael Macias, D-Topsham; and Kilton Webb, D-Durham in welcoming the Mt. Ararat High School Girls Basketball Team to the Maine State House. The Mt. Ararat High School Girls Basketball team received legislative sentiments for winning their first-ever state title.

“Winning a state championship requires more than talent — it takes determination and focus from the players, coaches and managers,” said Sen. Denise Tepler. “The collective will of this team is evident in their overwhelming success this season and throughout the tournament. As a proud mother of kids who were once MTA Eagle athletes, I cannot express how incredibly proud I am of you all. You’ve made your families, school and our entire community proud.”

“What our Mt. Ararat Girls Basketball Team has accomplished this season is nothing short of extraordinary. Winning their first-ever state championship is a moment that will live on in the hearts of our community for generations,” said President Matthea Daughtry. “Our lady Eagles showed grit, unity, and a level of determination that should inspire us all. I am beyond proud of their hard work as well as the coaches, families, and school staff who helped make this dream a reality.”

In February, the Mt. Ararat Girls Basketball Team won the team’s first Class A State Title since the school opened in 1973, serving the towns of Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, Harpswell and Topsham. The team finished the season with a 21-2 record and won 15 straight games heading into the State Championship. After January 3, the Eagles never allowed more than 57 points per game and outscored opponents by an average of 15 points per game.
