Sen. Denise Tepler and President Mattie Daughtry honor Drinking Water Week, welcome leaders from Brunswick & Topsham Water District to the Maine Senate
AUGUSTA — Today, Sen. Denise Tepler, D-Topsham, and Senate President Mattie Daughtry, D-Brunswick, welcomed Brunswick & Topsham Water District General Manager Craig Douglas and District Engineer TC Schofield to the Maine State Senate. The Brunswick and Topsham Water District received a legislative sentiment for being the recipient of the Maine Water Utilities Association’s President’s Award.
“It’s an honor to celebrate National Drinking Water Week by highlighting the water professionals who help provide clean, safe and reliable drinking water to our communities and keep it flowing around the clock in our Water District,” said Sen. Denise Tepler. “The Brunswick & Topsham Water District is a vital resource that has a deep commitment to fostering community, advancing research and data collection and being vigilant in the case against forever chemicals — showing us what great stewardship looks like.”
“Clean drinking water doesn’t happen by accident—it takes hard work, expertise, and constant vigilance,” said President Mattie Daughtry. “The Brunswick and Topsham Water District has consistently shown that commitment, especially in the wake of last year’s AFFF spill. Their swift action and clear communication helped reassure our community and protect our water. I’m proud to have them looking out for us.”
Last August, a malfunction in the fire suppression system at Hangar 4 at the former Brunswick Naval Air Station resulted in thousands of gallons of Aqueous Film-Forming Foam into the surrounding environment. Community concerns about contamination in the public water supply were directly addressed by the Water District, which engaged in transparent public communication and response to the incident. The Water District was able to test to determine the threat level to the public water supply from the spill.
National Drinking Water Week is a nationally recognized week to celebrate the vital role of clean, safe water in daily life and the importance of protecting this resource for future generations. This year’s Drinking Water Week is from May 4 to May 10.
