Sen. Duson shares 2026 MDOT work plan for state bridge and road projects

AUGUSTA – TodaySen. Jill Duson, D-Portland, announced the details of Maine’s three-year transportation infrastructure work plan, and what it means for Senate District 27. The plan is released annually with an outline of the Maine Department of Transportation’s strategy for road, bridge and other transportation upgrades and maintenance projects.

According to the Maine DOT, the three-year work plan makes a $4.5 billion investment in the construction and maintenance of transportation infrastructure across the state. It includes 2,798 individual work items for the calendar years 2026, 2027 and 2028.

In 2026, the Maine DOT will undertake numerous projects to enhance transportation in Senate District 27, including new walking and biking trails, roadway repairs and investment in public transportation.

“Well-maintained transportation infrastructure is essential for daily business, recreation and commerce,” said Sen. Duson. “My constituents in Portland and Westbrook deserve safe roads and bridges as they travel to and from work, school, medical appointments, grocery stores and more. We all look forward to the benefits of these projects. As you’re out and about this year, please remember to slow down and drive cautiously, especially in work zones.”

The following breakdown is the planned capital and maintenance work by MDOT for communities in Senate District 27 in calendar year 2026:

Bicycle/Pedestrian

  • Portland, South Portland and Cape Elizabeth: Priority Corridor and Centers Pedestrian-Bicyclist Safety and Access Project in various locations.
  • Portland: Multiuse trail/separated bikeways extending from Park Avenue to Fore River Parkway Trail.
  • Portland: On-road sidewalk/trail on Route 302 beginning 0.02 of a mile northwest of Newton Street and extending northwest 0.76 of a mile to Riverside Street.
  • Portland: Urban Partnership Initiative. On-road sidewalk/trail on Route 100 beginning at Pleasant Avenue and extending north 0.42 of a mile to Holly Street.
  • Westbrook: On-road sidewalk/trail on Route 25B beginning at Captain Bill Hartley Drive and extending west 0.96 of a mile to William B Clarke Drive.

Bridge and Structural Maintenance:

  • Portland, South Portland: Improvements to multiple Bridges on Interstate 295.

Bus

  • Portland: Greater Portland Transit District, facility construction.

Highway Construction/Rehabilitation

  • Portland: Reconstruction of Route 302 (Forest Avenue) beginning at Morrill’s Corner and extending north 0.08 of a mile.

Highway Paving

  • Portland, Falmouth: Route 26, beginning 0.03 of a mile south of Lyseth Moore Drive and extending north 2.03 miles.
  • Portland: Route 302,beginning 0.04 of a mile northwest of Warren Avenue and extending northwest 1.53 miles.
  • Portland: Saint John Street/Danforth Street,beginning at Vaughn Street and extending northwest 0.94 of a mile to Congress Street. Beginning at Falmouth Street and extending north 0.31 of a mile north to Brighton Avenue.
  • Portland, South Portland: Route 9/Route 9 West/Route 22,beginning at Broadway and extending east 3.67 miles to Stevens Avenue. Includes 0.58 of a mile on Skyway Drive.

Highway Safety and Spot Improvements

  • Portland: Improvements with the signal at the intersection of Route 25, Colonial Road, Columbia Road and Woodford Street.
  • Portland: Improvements located at the intersection of Skyway Drive, Route 22, and Hutchins Drive.
  • Portland, Westbrook: Improvements beginning 0.05 of a mile east of the Westbrook town line and extending west 3.18 miles.    

Policy, Planning, and Research

  • Portland, Westbrook: Active transportation and transit planning focused efforts connected to the regional, holistic and modally balanced planning study for traffic west of Portland.    
  • Portland, Westbrook: Regional, holistic and modally balanced planning study for traffic west of Portland.    

Transit – General

  • Portland, Auburn, Lewiston: Continuing a      2-year pilot, operating a bus service between Portland and Lewiston/Auburn.
  • Portland, South Portland, Biddeford, Old Orchard Beach, Scarborough: Transit Stop Access Prioritization Project. Improve 17 Transit stops between Old Orchard Beach and South Portland.
  • Portland, South Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough: Bus service interconnects with new micro transit services.                                         
  • Portland: Pilot project for Traffic Signal Operations.    
  • Portland: Fixed route expansion/redesign and addition of micro transit zones.
  • Portland: Bus stop improvements and micro transit vehicle acquisition.          
  • Portland: Replacement of aging buses and modernization of the Greater Portland Metro fleet and bus facilities.         
  • Westbrook: Replacement of two 8+2 vans.
