Sen. LaFountain bill to improve death benefit determinations earns unanimous, bipartisan support from committee
AUGUSTA — On Wednesday, Sen. Dave LaFountain’s bill LD 42, “An Act Regarding the Commissioner of Corrections’ Role in Death Benefit Determinations and Regarding Training for Corrections Officers,” received unanimous, bipartisan support from the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee. This bill would clarify who has control over making death benefit determinations.
“Historically, for no particular reason, the benefits of line of duty deaths in the State of Maine were determined by the Commissioner of Public Safety,” said Sen. LaFountain. “This move would allow department and agency heads to make that determination for their own departments. They know their personnel and the responsibilities better than anyone. Ensuring a fair and efficient process for both the affected families and the Department is paramount to responsible governing.”
This bill now faces votes in the Senate and House.
