Sen. Lawrence reacts to Supreme Court opinion overturning Roe V. Wade
This morning, the U.S. Supreme Court issued an opinion in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, officially overturning the abortion rights affirmed in the case of Roe v. Wade. Sen. Mark W. Lawrence, D-Eliot, released the following statement in response:
“The abrupt and unprecedented decision by the US Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, represents a blow to the personal freedoms and individual liberties of Americans. This ruling ushers in an era of increased government control over personal liberties. We will be battling this government control for the decades come. The Bill of Rights was designed by the founders of this nation to prevent governments — state and federal — from stripping away individual rights guaranteed by our Constitution.
“This ruling abolishes constitutionally guaranteed protection for personal liberties and places decision-making authority over individual freedoms in the hands of politicians in state legislatures and governor’s offices. Overturning Roe v. Wade has no basis in American constitutional law and tradition. Thankfully, Mainers have a long history of protecting individual liberties and keeping abortion in Maine safe, legal and rare. I am proud to have a 100% pro-choice voting record in this great Maine tradition, and I pledge to work to protect against attacks on reproductive health in Maine and to keep the government out of individual and family decisions and reproductive health care decisions.”
