Sen. Luchini bill to support Maine theaters signed into law

AUGUSTA – On Tuesday, May 25, a bill from Sen. Louie Luchini, D-Ellsworth, to support Maine theaters and performing arts centers was signed into law by Gov. Janet Mills. LD 1620, “An Act To Support Maine Theaters by Expanding Eligibility for Off-premises Catering Licenses,” allows auditoriums, civic auditoriums and performing arts centers currently licensed to sell spirits, wine and malt liquor to also obtain a license to sell alcohol at off-premises events.

“As the weather gets warmer and visitors flow into our state, I’m hopeful this law will give our theaters and performing arts venues a chance to rebound and have the successful summer season they missed out on last year,” said Sen. Luchini. “I’m glad Gov. Mills signed this into law now, so that theaters can get back on their feet as soon as possible.”

Under previous law, only hotels, bed and breakfasts, restaurants, lounges and clubs were able to sell alcohol at off-premises events, meaning theaters were required to hire a third party to cater events, adding risk and expense.

Maine’s theaters have been hit hard during the pandemic. During the public hearing on LD 1620, Lauren Wayne, general manager of the State Theatre in Portland, and Nick Turner of The Grand theater in Ellsworth, testified in favor of the bill. Both testified that their venues had lost about 98 percent of their revenue in the past year due to the pandemic.

As an emergency measure, the law goes into effect immediately.
