Sen. Mark Lawrence to chair the Energy, Utilities and Technology Committee for the 132nd Maine Legislature

AUGUSTA — Sen. Mark Lawrence, D-Eliot, has been appointed by Senate President Mattie Daughtry, D-Brunswick, to serve as Senate chair of the Legislature’s Joint Standing Committee on Energy, Utilities and Technology for the 132nd Maine Legislature. 

The Energy, Utilities and Technology Committee oversees the state’s policy on energy, emergency communication systems, local broadcasting and radio services, broadband, and electricity.

“I look forward to advancing the work of the EUT Committee as we build on Maine’s clean energy goals and continue standing up for Maine ratepayers,” said Sen. Lawrence. “With the rising costs of energy and the threat of climate change to our region, the Committee is ready to get to work to deliver for the people of Maine.”   

Sen. Lawrence will also serve on the Senate Standing Committee on Conduct and Ethics. This Committee oversees any order or complaints brought forward to the senate regarding a member of the Senate who may have breached ethics and code of conduct.  

Lawmakers are assigned to committees by the presiding officers based on their interests, experience and professional background. Joint standing committees are composed of three senators and ten representatives.  

Sen. Lawrence is a practicing attorney from Southern Maine, with a distinguished career in public service. He was first elected to the Maine House of Representatives during his second year of law school in the late 1980s. He is serving his eighth non-consecutive term in the Maine Senate. Sen. Lawrence served as Senate President from 1996 to 2000 and as York County District Attorney from 2003 to 2010 before opening up a private practice in South Berwick. Sen. Lawrence is one of the founding members of the Laudholm Trust in Wells and has worked to secure funding for Land for Maine’s Future.

Sen. Lawrence represents Maine Senate District 35, which includes the communities of Eliot, Kittery, Ogunquit, South Berwick and York.  

The Legislature is set to reconvene on Jan. 8, 2025.
