AUGUSTA — On Friday, February 14, Sen. Mike Tipping, D-Orono, was reappointed to the Maine-Canadian Legislative Advisory Commission by Senate President Mattie Daughtry, D-Brunswick.

“My family and I have close ties to Canada,” said Sen. Tipping. “I went to college in Nova Scotia, and my wife is Canadian. Most of our vacations are trips to the Atlantic Provinces, so our kids can visit their extended family. That’s one of the many reasons why I’m concerned about the new federal administration’s attacks on our Canadian neighbors and threats to implement tariffs that will hurt regular people on both sides of the border. Maine and Canada have long maintained mutually-beneficial exchanges in people, commerce and culture. We should continue to invest in our positive, reciprocal relationship.”

The Maine-Canadian Legislative Advisory Commission advises the Director of the Maine-Canadian Legislative Advisory Office on the Director’s duties and powers. The Commission also assists the Director with encouraging increased cooperation between Maine and Canada, especially between the Maine State Legislature and the legislative bodies of Canada. Finally, it assists the Director with encouraging economic, cultural, and educational exchanges between Maine and the Canadian Provinces.

The Senate President appoints six members, two for a term of one year and four who must be senators and who each hold office from the date of the appointment until the term of election to the Legislature expires. At least one member must be fluent in the French language.

Sen. Tipping has served as a member of the Commission since 2023.
