Sen. Miramant earns perfect score for voting record on environment and natural resources

AUGUSTA – Sen. David Miramant, D-Camden, earned a perfect score from the Maine Conservation Voters for his votes this session to preserve Maine’s natural resources, promote energy independence and protect the public from harmful chemicals. Sen. Miramant was one of 17 state senators to earn a perfect score on the 2021 Environmental Scorecard released earlier this week, which tracks how lawmakers voted on seven key proposals debated by the Maine Legislature this past year. Sen. Miramant also received a lifetime score of 100% for supporting Maine’s environment for his entire career.

“Climate change is a real and present threat, due largely to human action and unfortunately human inaction,” said Sen. Miramant. “That’s why I am always dedicated to advocating for changes we can make to protect our planet. Our environment and our economy depend on each other. Our foresters, farmers and fishers depend on us to preserve our natural resources, from clean water and fresh air to responsible land use. Our environment is too precious to waste. Every day, greedy corporations do more and more damage to our planet. That’s why I believe that it is our responsibility as lawmakers to make sure our natural resources are protected, for today and tomorrow.”

Sen. Miramant has a long history of supporting initiatives to care for, defend and preserve Maine’s environment, which inevitably promotes the health and well-being of Maine people and our economy. This year, Sen. Miramant supported a significant historic investment in the Land for Maine’s Future to grow our public lands for the next generation. Sen. Miramant also supported divesting Maine’s retirement fund from fossil fuels. This first-in-the-nation legislation aligns Maine’s money with our values, further solidifies Maine as a national climate leader and is a wise long-term financial decision as the fossil fuel industry continues to underperform.

In this session, Sen. Miramant also supported recycling reform and banning the aerial spraying of herbicides. He also introduced legislation to ban the use of plastic straws, but it failed to become law. One study has shown that 8.3 billion straws pollute the world’s beaches, which makes up merely a fraction of plastic flowing into the ocean each year. Sen. Miramant believes that we have an individual responsibility to step up and protect our planet when large corporations have demonstrated time and time again that they will not.
