Sen. Tepler shares 2026 MDOT work plan for state bridge and road projects

AUGUSTA – On Thursday, March 12,Sen. Denise Tepler, D-Topsham, announced the details of Maine’s three-year transportation infrastructure work plan, and what it means for Senate District 24. The plan is released annually with an outline of the Maine Department of Transportation’s strategy for road, bridge and other transportation upgrades and maintenance projects.

According to the Maine DOT, the three-year work plan makes a $4.5 billion investment in the construction and maintenance of transportation infrastructure across the state. It includes 2,798 individual work items for the calendar years 2026, 2027 and 2028.

In 2026, the Maine DOT will undertake numerous projects to enhance transportation in Senate District 24, including highway paving and safety improvements, bridge repairs and new walking paths.

“Midcoast roads get hit hard by frost heaves in the winter and spring, and increased tourism during the summer and fall,” said Sen. Tepler. “These improvements, repairs and new construction Maine DOT is bringing to District 24 aim to make our transportation safer and more convenient for everyone. However, I know these plans are less comprehensive than some of our communities would prefer. The following breakdown is the planned capital and maintenance work by Maine DOT for communities in Senate District 24 in calendar year 2026:

Bicycle/Pedestrian

  • Bath: Safety improvements to sidewalks on Washington Street, Union Street and Castine Avenue, including pedestrian crossing improvements.
  • Bath: New sidewalks along the north and southbound sections of Leeman Highway to close gaps in the city’s existing sidewalk network.
  • Bowdoinham: New construction of an on-road sidewalk/trail beginning at Route 138 and extending southeast 0.50 of a mile to Center Street.

Bridge and Structural Maintenance:

  • Arrowsic: Replacing joint seals on Max L. Wilder Memorial Bridge (#2026), which carries Route 127 over Sasonoa River in Woolwich and Arrowsic, located 0.22 of a mile south of the intersection of Route 1.
  • Arrowsic, Woolwich: Painting Max L. Wilder Memorial Bridge (#2026) over Sasonoa River, located 0.20 of a mile south of Route 1.
  • Bath: Replacing Sewall Bridge (#2392) over Whiskeag Creek, located 0.31 of a mile north of Judkins Avenue.
  • Bath:Painting Centre St. Connection Bridge (#6142) over Route 1, located 0.09 of a mile north of State Road.
  • Bath, Woolwich: Rehabilitation of Rail Bridge (#3007), located on the Bath-Woolwich town line.
  • Bowdoinham: Improvements to Lower Abagadasset Bridge (#3432) over the Abagadasset River, located 0.25 of a mile east of Abagadasset Road.
  • Georgetown: Substructure rehabilitation of East Bridge (#2248) over Robinhood Cove, located 0.02 of a mile west of Indian Point Road.
  • Georgetown: Substructure rehabilitation of West Bridge (#2927) over Robinhood Cove, located 0.04 of a mile east of Knight Lane.
  • Richmond: Replacement of Josh Bridge (#0976) over Abagadasset River, located 0.41 of a mile west of Savage Road.
  • Brunswick, Topsham: Improvements to I-295 NB/Androscoggin River Bridge (#6268) over the Androscoggin River, located 0.35 of a mile north of River Road.
  • Topsham: Improvements to Route 196/I-295 Bridge (#6307) over interstate 295 northbound and southbound, located 0.23 of a mile west of Topsham Fair Mall Road.
  • West Bath: Painting New Meadows Road Bridge (#6145) over Route 1 northbound and southbound, located 0.05 of a mile north of Larrabees Grove Road.
  • Woolwich: Replacing curb and installing new post and rail on Old Nequasset Bridge (#2601) which carries George Wright Road over Nequasset Brook in Woolwich, located 200 feet west of the intersection of Barley Neck Road.
  • Woolwich: Replacing wearing surface on Union Bridge (#5641), which carries Old Stage Road over Nequasset Brook in Woolwich, located 0.19 of a mile west of the intersection of Dana Mill Road.
  • Dresden: Replacing Middle Bridge (#3341) over Eastern River, located 0.28 of a mile west of Route 127.

Drainage Maintenance 

  • Perkins Township, Washington Township, Weld: Ditching and replacing culverts on Route 156, beginning at the Wilton-Washington Twp. line and extending 7.50 miles northwest to the intersection of Center Hill Road in Weld.
  • Richmond: Ditching and replacing culvert (#124908) on Alexander Reed Road in Richmond, beginning at the intersection of Route 197 and extending 1.52 miles northwest to the intersection of Langdon Road.

Highway Construction/Rehabilitation

  • Bowdoin, Bowdoinham: Route 125, beginning at Route 201 and extending east 1.05 miles.
  • Bowdoin, Richmond:  Route 197, beginning at the Interstate 95 Overpass and extending east 4.80 miles to route 201.
  • Phippsburg: Route 209, beginning 0.71 of a mile east of Route 216 and extending east 0.16 of a mile, including large culvert (#1017939).
  • West Bath: Ditching on New Meadows Road in West Bath beginning at the intersection of State Road and extending 0.68 of a mile north to the intersection of Route 1.

Highway Paving

  • Arrowsic, Georgetown: Route 127,beginning 0.06 of a mile south of Bailey Bluff Road and extending south 10.16 miles.
  • Bath: Congress Avenue, beginning 0.08 of a mile north of Route 1 and extending north 0.19 of a mile and beginning 0.23 of a mile east of Anchor Road and extending east 0.14 of a mile.
  • Bowdoin: Store Road, beginning at Route 125 and extending north 0.81 of a mile to the Sabattus town line.
  • Bowdoinham: Route 127, beginning at Route 138 and extending southeast 0.66 of a mile to Route 24.
  • Georgetown: Seguinland Road, beginning 0.08 of a mile north of Griffiths Head Road and extending north 2.11 miles to Route 127.
  • Dresden, Richmond: Route 197, beginning at Route 24 and extending east 2.30 miles to Route 127.
  • Litchfield, Richmond: Route 197, beginning at Plains Road and extending east 0.82 of a mile.
  • Brunswick, Cumberland, Falmouth, Freeport, Topsham, Yarmouth:  I-295 South, beginning 0.39 of a mile north of the Brunswick town line and extending south 21.98 miles including approaches and ramps.
  • Dresden, Pittston, Wiscasset: Route 127, beginning at Route 1 and extending north 12.67 miles. This project is using Congressionally Directed Spending.
  • Dresden, Richmond: Route 197, beginning at Route 24 and extending east 2.30 miles to Route 127.

Highway Safety and Spot Improvements

  • Phippsburg: Replacing large culvert on Route 216 (#194616) located 0.18 of a mile south of Alliquippa Road.
  • West Bath: Drainage improvements on State Road,beginning 0.01 of a mile southeast of Bull Rock Road and extending east 1.48 miles to the Bath town line.
  • West Bath: Drainage improvements to the cross culvert (#960067) located 0.15 of a mile east of Bull Rock Road.
  • Woolwich: Replacing large culvert on Route 128 (#228492) located 0.90 of a mile north of Old Stage Road.

Special Programs

  • Arrowsic: Project includes scoping and conceptual design with hydrologic modeling and geotechnical surveys at both road crossing sites on Spinney Mill Road and Indian Rest Road.
