Sen. Tim Nangle hosts Robert C. Clark of Windham at the State House

Posted: January 28, 2025 | Senator Nangle

AUGUSTA — On Tuesday, Jan. 28, Sen. Tim Nangle, D-Windham, hosted poet Robert C. Clark of Windham at the State House. Robert delivered the opening invocation before the Maine Senate, sharing a poem he wrote titled “Those We Never Knew.” The poem offers a stirring reflection on the origins of American independence, honoring the courage of those who fought for freedom.

“Robert’s poem served as a powerful reminder of the values and sacrifices that have shaped our nation,” said Sen. Nangle. “It’s fitting that we began the day with these words of reflection and gratitude. His invocation highlighted the importance of remembering our shared history as we roll up our sleeves and get to work for Maine people.”

Part of session days — when legislators are meeting in the Senate and House Chambers — includes the offering of a brief inspirational message to guide the lawmakers through their deliberations for the day. Out of respect for the diversity in the Senate Chamber, the Senate Secretary’s Office asks that these invocations be non-secular and non-political.

Those We Never Knew

For “Independence” cheer July the 4th is here

Reminding us each year how liberty is dear!

At Lexington unfurled the Minutemen who whirled

A musket ball that hurled the “shot heard round the world”.

Soon Charlestown hills were met with swords and bayonets

Where patriots upset the English epaulettes.

These acts of war began on water and on land

To symbolize and stand against tax out-of-hand.

With rifles to their knees an era became seized

By 13 colonies against the jewels of greed.

While sorely ill prepared their Declaration dared

To shift the power shared by only Crown and heirs. Though

years it took to win by Washington and friends When

Yorktown smoke wore thin its flag was passed to him. So

now when hear we do the fireworks renew

Thank those we never knew for bringing freedom through!
