Bill restores funding levels to Drugs for the Elderly program

AUGUSTA—Earlier today, the Senate approved a measure to restore funding levels and eligibility requirements for drug programs for the elderly and disabled by a bipartisan vote of 22-13. Cuts to the program were enacted under the Republican-controlled Legislature in the 2011-2012 budget cycle.

“The program provides support for the elderly and people with disabilities who cannot afford the prescription drugs necessary for their health,” said Senator John Tuttle (D-Sanford), the sponsor of the bill. “As a society, it is our duty to help care for our seniors. Now we must continue doing what is right so that people do not have to choose between life-saving medication and heat for their homes.”

The Drugs for the Elderly program and the Medicare Savings Plan help nearly 35,000 seniors pay for their life saving medications and afford the copays to their doctor.

“A lot of my constituents struggle every day to pay for their medicine,” said Senator Craven (D-Lewiston). “Our seniors should be able to access their medicine without worry and without having to go without. Passing this bill will help us keep our seniors happy, healthy, and in their own homes in their communities.”

The measure, LD 629, An Act To Restore Eligibility and Funding for Drug Programs for the Elderly and Disabled, faces more votes in the House and Senate.
