SENATE ENACTS MEASURE TO PROTECT SACO BAY FROM EROSION
Senator Valentino’s bill will protect sand beach from further erosion
AUGUSTA –Earlier today, the Senate enacted Democratic Senator Linda Valentino’s measure to protect Saco Bay from erosion caused by the Camp Ellis jetty, an installation owned by the federal government.
“Right now, Saco Bay is in jeopardy,” said Senator Valentino. “If we don’t take steps to protect our sand beaches from erosion, they could disappear along with an important segment of our economy.”
According to the Maine Geological Survey, half of all Mainers live near the coast, and more than 6 million people visit Maine’s coastline each year.
Senator Valentino’s measure would streamline the permit process for sand rejuvenation efforts in areas affected by erosion caused by federal government installations.
The bill, LD 1644, “An Act To Allow Municipalities To Stabilize Sand Dunes Affected by Actions of the Federal Government,” will now be sent to the Governor.
