AUGUSTA — On Wednesday, the Maine Senate passed a bill from Sen. Mattie Daughtry, D-Brunswick, to better help teachers in Maine create inclusive, supportive classrooms. LD 633, “Resolve, Directing the Department of Education To Implement Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Training for Educators,” received unanimous, bipartisan support.

“Teachers help guide their students to be life-long learners and future leaders. But they also help set the example for getting along, sharing what makes us unique, and offering empathy to each other. Just as they do all they can to support our young people, we should do what we can to make sure they have the training and support to do every part of their jobs,” said Sen. Daughtry. “This bill will help students, educators, and ultimately our whole communities. I’m thankful to everyone who supported it.”

As amended, LD 633 would require the Department of Education to require certified employees in a school — including but not limited to superintendents, principals, teachers and educational technicians — to complete a diversity, equity and inclusion training program as a condition of recertification.

This bill is supported by the ACLU of Maine and the Maine Education Association.

LD 633 faces further votes in the Legislature.
