Sponsors Bill To Improve Veterans’ Access To Property Tax Relief

AUGUSTA— At today’s public hearing Senator John Cleveland (D-Auburn) spoke in support of his bill to improve Maine veterans’ access to property tax relief.

“I am pleased to sponsor this bill,” Senator Cleveland said. “It provides the property tax exemption to all veterans regardless of when they served.  I believe that all veterans who have served their country, with the knowledge that they could have been put in harm’s way at any time, deserve the same property tax exemption that other veterans currently enjoy.”

Under the current system, only veterans who served in the armed forced during certain recognized periods of wartime qualify for relief under the Maine Veterans’ Property Tax Exemption.  Senator Cleveland’s bill, LD 1226, “An Act to Improve the Maine Veterans’ Property Tax Exemption,” would extend that exemption to cover all veterans.

A work session on LD 1226 has been scheduled for Friday, April 12 at 10:00 a.m. in Room 127 of the State House.
