SENATOR GRATWICK APPEALS REJECTION OF BILL TO HELP FORMER FOSTER CARE CHILDREN PURSUE A COLLEGE DEGREE

Posted: November 12, 2013 | Senator Gratwick

AUGUSTA – Senator Geoff Gratwick of Bangor is appealing the exclusion of his bill to help former foster children complete their education from consideration by the full Legislature.

“The needs of students aging out of foster care are urgent and ongoing,” said Senator Gratwick. “I have met with many who are passionate, involved, articulate, and concerned. We cannot afford to waste the talents of our determined young people.”

Currently, children who grew up in foster care receive support for tuition, living expenses, and case management services until they reach the age of 21. This legislation would extend support until the student completes his or her education.

“Those who have overcome tremendous adversity and gone on to college should be supported and encouraged as they work towards their education and strive to become successful members of society,” continued Senator Gratwick.

For the second regular session of the legislature, bills that go before the entire Legislature must first be approved by the Legislative Council, a committee comprised of the ten legislative leaders. The Legislative Council met last month and approved slightly more than 100 bills.

The Legislative Council will meet on November 21 to review appeals.
