Environmental conservation group praises lawmaker for commitment to natural resources

AUGUSTA – Assistant Senate Majority Leader Anne Haskell (D-Portland) joined a bi-partisan group of lawmakers to announce the annual Environmental Scorecard prepared by the Maine Conservation Voters (MCV) in a news conference at the State House yesterday.  The scorecard provides nonpartisan, objective information on how legislators voted on key environmental bills.

Senator Haskell received a 100% rating from the MCV for her support of environmental issues during the 126th Legislature.

“As an outdoorswoman, I have always been dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of our state and my votes as a lawmaker reflect my commitment to protecting our environment,” said Senator Haskell.

Senator Haskell is one of 18 Democratic and Unenrolled senators to receive a perfect score, or a 6 of 7 score from the Maine Conservation Voters.

The MCV is dedicated to supporting policies and laws to protect our natural resources and the Maine brand–our air, land, water, and wildlife. For the past 25 years, MCV has released an annual legislative scorecard to evaluate lawmakers’ commitment to protecting the environment.

During the 2013 legislative session, Senator Haskell supported bills to open the St. Croix River to alewives, improve the process for wind power development, label genetically modified (GMO) foods, study the impact of climate change in Maine, expand the Kids Safe Product Act, strengthen water quality protections for open-pit mining, and establish a program for paint recycling.

In the report accompanying the scorecard, Senator Haskell was also praised for her work on a bill to protect loons from lead poisoning.
