SENATOR JACKSON RECEIVES PERFECT SCORE ON EDUCATION RECORD

AUGUSTA – Senate Majority Leader Troy Jackson of Allagash has received a 100% rating from the Maine Education Association for his support of education issues during the 126th Legislature.

“Investing in our children and grandchildren is one of the most important things we can do as a society,” said Senator Jackson. “Education is part of building a strong foundation for all Mainers and giving people the opportunity to climb the ladder of success.”

Senator Jackson is one of 14 Democratic senators to receive a perfect score from the Maine Education Association.

The Maine Education Association represents 25,000 teachers in Maine and is dedicated to supporting policies and laws to improve public education.

During the 2013 legislative session, Senator Jackson supported the legislature’s two-year budget, which provided an additional $30 million in funding for public schools and provides a path for the state to fulfill its commitment to fund education at the 55 percent level.

Senator Jackson also supported bills to increase suicide awareness and prevention in schools, improve the rules for restraint and seclusion, and increase school funding by phasing out a provision that allowed some districts to reduce funding to their schools.

Senator Jackson opposed a bill to allow guns in schools, and the Governor’s proposal for the state to take over failing schools, create a voucher system, and lift the cap on the number of charter schools.

The Legislature will reconvene in January 2014.
