AUGUSTA — Sen. Justin Chenette, D-Saco, and Sen. Susan Deschambault, D-Biddeford, earned perfect scores from the Maine Conservation Voters for their votes to preserve Maine’s rich natural resources, invest in clean, renewable energy and protect the public from harmful chemicals.

“Investing in solar and other renewable energy sources is about saving Mainers money and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.” said Sen. Chenette. “We finally have been in a position to put Maine on the map for leading on the issue of mitigating climate change and starting us down a path of creating new clean energy jobs.”

“Without a doubt, there’s still more to be done,” said Sen. Deschambault, “but we are making good progress with environmental protection here at the Legislature.”

Sens. Chenette and Deschambault both received 100 percent voting records from the Maine Conservation Voters for 2019.  These senators have a long history of support initiatives to promote, protect and preserve Maine’s environment.

Sen. Chenette sits on the Environmental and Natural Resources Committee and sponsored a law, LD 1121, “An Act To Acknowledge Potable Water as a Necessity,” that clarifies in state law that water is a natural right. Since the beginning of his time in the legislature, Sen. Chenette has been a tireless advocate for the environment. Most recently, Sen. Chenette was appointed to the Maine Climate Council’s Coastal & Marine Working Group to tackle coastal erosion issues.

Likewise, Sen. Deschambault has supported environmental causes and received a 100% lifetime rating from Maine Conservation Voters, for her support on environmental issues.

The Maine Conservation Voters scored six key initiatives debated by the legislature this year, including the Land for Maine’s Future Bond, which was the only initiative proposal in the scorecard that didn’t pass. All 21 Senate Democrats received perfect scores for their environmental record.
