Work plan for state bridge and road projects unveiled

Democratic Sen. Rebecca Millett of Cape Elizabeth is pleased to share the details of Maine’s three-year transportation infrastructure work plan, and what it means for South Portland, Cape Elizabeth, and Scarborough. The plan is released annually with an outline of the Maine Department of Transportation’s strategy for road, bridge and other transportation projects throughout the state.

“The safety and reliability of our transportation infrastructure is of critical importance to Mainers every day,” said Sen. Millett. “I’m looking forward to seeing the end result of these projects over the next few years and will keep working to ensure maintenance and improvement projects have sufficient funding.”

According to the MDOT, the work plan includes more than $2.3 billion worth of construction and maintenance, of which $537 million is scheduled for 632 capital projects in 2017. Included are projects for highways and bridges, transit (bus), passenger and freight railroad, aviation, ferries, ports and other marine facilities, and bicycle-pedestrian access.

Sen. Millett stressed the importance of funding for the MDOT work plan and its investment to South Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough and entire state. The following breakdown is what the planned capital and maintenance work will mean for these communities in 2017:

Bicycle/Pedestrian

  • Work on 0.21 miles of Route 114 from Adams Way to Hannaford Drive
  • Work on 0.07 miles of Route 1 from Haskell Street to Broadway

Bridge Work (Other)

  • Work on the Route 1 Connector Bridge over Broadway in South Portland
  • Work on the Route 1 southbound Ramp SP4 Bridge over the northbound ramp of Interstate 295 to 1/PTR in South Portland
  • Work on the Interstate 295 Bridges from South Portland to Brunswick
  • Work to restore the aquatic organism passage in Red Brook at the Interstate 295-Ramp 5/Red Brook Bridge in South Portland

Highway Construction

  • Work on Route 114 from Wentworth Drive to Payne Road

Highway Light Capital Paving

  • Paving in Scarborough as part of a larger project including work on Route 4A, Route 9, Saco Street, Stroudwater Street, Route 22, Route 4 and Route 5 in Arundel, Buxton, Dayton, Gorham, Hollis, Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, Lyman, Scarborough and Westbrook

Highway Safety and Spot Improvements

  • Planning and scoping effort to evaluate new access on Interstate 295 at Exit 4 southbound in South Portland
  • Work at the intersection of Broadway and Evans Street and at the intersection of Broadway and Lincoln Streets

Maintenance

  • Ditching on 0.63 miles of Mussey Road from Honan Road in Scarborough
  • Retrofitting pneumatic control system at the MaineDOT Region Office Building on Pleasant Hill Road in Scarborough with a direct digital control system
  • Ditching and replacing culverts on 2.30 miles of Bradturn Road in Buxton and Scarborough
  • Ditching on 0.86 miles of Holmes Road in Scarborough
  • Replacing a stone culvert on Route 22 in Scarborough to improve drainage
  • Ditching on 0.75 miles of Payne Road in Scarborough
  • Welding steel plates and bracing on metal bin walls on Skunk Hill Overpass Bridge, which carries Route 1 over the Portland Terminal Railroad in South Portland
