Sen. Tuttle Sponsors Bill to Assist York County Community College
AUGUSTA- Senator John Tuttle (D-Sanford) has sponsored a measure to provide increased funding for York County Community College.
“This bill is necessary not only for the community college but for the economy of York County and the State of Maine,” said Senator Tuttle at Wednesday’s public hearing in the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee. “We have unique opportunities to create good-paying skilled manufacturing jobs, with companies such as Pratt & Whitney planning to hire over 300 people. But without the skills training that York County Community College provides, too many Mainers will not qualify for these jobs.”
York County Community College is now launching the Precision Machining Technology Program in Sanford, to train students in mathematics, physics, engineering technology, manufacturing processes and methods, and more. In 2011, Community College Week listed York County Community College as one of the fastest growing community colleges in the nation; and the rate of growth has been higher than that of any other higher education institution in the state, public or private.
The bill, L.D. 862, will provide $2 million per year beginning in fiscal year 2013-2014.
