Augusta – Governor LePage also signed a new law tightening the restrictions on teen drivers.  Fines will skyrocket up to $500 for repeat offenders driving on a provisional license and suspensions will be much longer.  “I think this will get their attention,” the bill’s sponsor, Senator Bill Diamond, said Tuesday. “We have an epidemic of people dying on the highways. I think we have to do something and I think this is a good beginning.”

The law doesn’t just target young drivers when it comes to distracted driving.  Fines for all Mainers caught texting and driving will increase from $100-$250 and Diamond says banning all cell phone use for Maine drivers could be coming.  “I think no use of cell phones is on its way without a doubt. We’ve seen reports out of the Department of Transportation about how cognitively your mind is not on the road if you’re on the phone. And it’s just a matter of time before politically we get enough courage to pass that law. It’s on its way.”

The law signed Tuesday will take effect 90 days after the close of this legislative session.
