Sen. Mark Lawrence earns perfect score from Maine AFL-CIO for voting record supporting working families
AUGUSTA — Sen. Mark Lawrence, D-Eliot, received a perfect score on the Maine AFL-CIO’s 2025 Legislative Scorecard for his voting record to promote fair wages, ensure safe work environments and support working families. Sen. Lawrence was one of 17 senators to earn a perfect score. The Maine AFL-CIO scored 11 initiatives considered by the 132nd Maine Legislature in 2025.
“As the son of a shipbuilder and a proud union father myself, supporting working families at every step is personal to me,” said Sen. Lawrence. “This session, my colleagues and I sought solutions to further the workplace protections of and benefits for working Mainers and were able to make real progress. As Senate chair of the energy committee, I led the passage of a bill to ensure workers at the forefront of our clean energy transition will have safe working conditions and fair pay. Our local delegation will continue to stand up for the interests of our district’s workers, including the federal workers at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard enduring this government shutdown.”
Sen. Lawrence received a perfect score for supporting legislation that would lower costs for working families and protect the state’s future as a place for families to live happily and raise a family. Sen. Lawrence supported legislation to:
● Protect the income of federal and state employees during government shutdowns.
● Guarantee a minimum wage for Maine farmworkers.
● Fund public pre-K-12 education by making the wealthiest pay their fair share.
● Strengthen the pre-apprenticeship programs that bolster Maine’s workforce.
● Improve recruitment, retention and pay for state employees.
● Ensure that the workers powering Maine’s clean energy transition are compensated fairly with good benefits.
● Help law enforcement and first responders access treatment for PTSD.
● Fund Maine government services and programs, including education and revenue sharing.
Sen. Lawrence also opposed a perennial effort that would weaken the ability of workers to organize for better wages and safe working conditions.
Sen. Lawrence has a long history of supporting working families in the Legislature. Since he was re-elected to the Maine Senate in 2018, Sen. Lawrence has received a 100% score from the Maine AFL-CIO each year, excluding 2020, when no scorecard was issued.
Sen. Lawrence is serving his fourth consecutive term in the Maine Senate and represents Senate District 35, which includes Eliot, Kittery, Ogunquit, South Berwick and York. Sen. Lawrence serves as Senate chair of the Legislature’s Energy, Utilities and Technology Committee.
